Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, advertising, maintaining, patronizing, or soliciting a person for labor or services, through the act of fraud, coercion or force for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, debt bondage, or slavery. Are you aware of the signs of human trafficking? Do you know what to do if you suspect someone is a victim of human trafficking?

Hidden in Plain Sight-It Happens Everywhere

Human trafficking can happen ANYWHERE! Human trafficking includes both labor and sex trafficking. Some areas of where labor trafficking occurs are nail salons, factories, janitorial jobs, construction sites, farms, restaurants and hotels. Sex trafficking can take place in massage parlors, truck stops, strip clubs, military bases, modeling studios and on the internet.

What Exactly Does “Hidden in Plain Sight” Mean?

To be unnoticeable, by staying visible in a setting that masks presence.

Indicators and Red Flags

Due to the different forms and locations of human trafficking, it is very important to know what to look and listen for. Understanding and knowing the red flags of human trafficking plays an important role into getting a possible victim rescued. Red flags of human trafficking can include:
* Unusual security measures at a home or business
* Having a partner that is noticeably older
* No form of identification
* Has few or no personal possessions
* Has multiple injuries but vaguely explains them
* Branding
* Anxious, depressed or overly submissive behavior

How To Respond

If you think you have met a victim of human trafficking, call local enforcement or call the human trafficking hotline at 1-888-3737-888. But, DO NOT try to be a hero. This not only puts you in danger, but also the alleged victim.

Resilient Kids: A Community Response

March 14-15, 2019
Eastern AHEC, Greenville, N.C.
As we know, childhood experiences, both good and bad, have an enormous impact on long term health outcomes and success for an individual. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) have been linked to chronic health conditions such as cancer, heart disease and stroke, high risk behaviors such as smoking and alcohol and drug use, and psychosocial difficulties like high dropout rates, poor academic achievement, and chronic unemployment. Prevention and early intervention appear to be key to mitigating the effects of ACES and halting the long term negative impact on a person’s life.
This two-day conference will start with an overview of ACES and the impact of traumatic stress exposure on children, while discussing the benefits of trauma-informed care. Next, you will hear about Reconnect for Resilience and how this skill-based approach to ACES can help re-set the brain and build resiliency.
