What is Bullying?

Bullying is making fun of, putting down or threatening another person. Sometimes it involves hitting or shoving.

It’s done on purpose, and it’s often done over and over again.

How Does Bullying Hurt?

People who are bullied feel unsafe. They can also feel afraid and lonely. They may not even know or understand why they’re being bullied.

Its hard to forget the mean things a bully says or does. In some cases, a person might even begin to feel that the bully is right.

Some people who’ve been bullied then bully others.

Why Do People Bully?

They want to hurt others

They like to make fun of people who are different.

They like to feel powerful.

They’re trying to move attention away from themselves.

They think it’s funny and no big deal.

What’s Bullying Got to Do with Me?

You’re a victim if someone bullies you. You need to tell and get help.

You’re a bystander if you see someone being bullied. You need to help the victim tell and get help. You need to help the victim tell and get help. You need to show others that bullying is unacceptable.

You’re a bully if you make fun of, put down or deliberately hurt someone. Ask someone you trust to help. It takes courage to stop being a bully!

Bullying is Real! Bullying is Wrong!

You might think bullying happens only to little kids. The truth is that eing a bully or being bullied has no age limit.

Bullying is mean, cruel, and disrespectful. It’s no way to treat anyone.

Being a bully or being bullied are not ‘just natural parts of growing up.”

Putting others down or hurting them, or not feeling safe because of what someone is doing to you, is not healthy.

You Can Take a Stand Against Bullying

Who has the most power to stop bullying? You and your friends!

Here are some things you can do:

Think about it. Bullies pick on people they think won’t fight back. They bully kids they think no one will stand up for. Bullies like it when others laugh. But imagine how you’d feel if you were the one being bullied.

Choose. Don’t be a part of any kind of bullying. Don’t ignore it if it happens. Choose friends who think the way you do.

Act. When you see or know that someone’s being bullied:

Size up the situation.

If you can safely speak up to stop it, say something.

Get adult help if you need to.

Work together with your teachers, family, classmates and friends. Talk about it. Plan creative ways to get the word out and stop bullying.
